Knobs

Buyer's Guide: Knobs Impala Elephant Head Knob

Knobs are a simple way to update a kitchen, bathroom, or furniture piece and require only basic installation. There are so many styles, choices and colors when selecting knobs, so there is something to complement any décor style. These unobtrusive, subtle embellishments can also be though of as jewelry for your cabinets - a way to add some pizzazz and character to a space.

Race to the Finish

There are so many finishes and colors available, so it is a good idea to start by determining a complementary finish. Also consider the style you want to achieve when determining material. Modern pieces will be enhanced by sleek, metal finishes while country styles pair well with ceramic or wooden knobs. If you have whimsical décor or an eclectic style, themed knobs or hand-painted patterns can add some flair.

Material

Finishes look great, but can be deceiving. For example, a knob made of zinc can be available in a bronze finish, so make sure select a knob that will fit your style and material needs. These options give you versatility in your selection, but it is important to make sure you are selecting the appropriate material for your need, then choose the finish to match you style.

The material should be appropriate for the location. Knobs installed in bathrooms should have a durable finish that can hold up to humidity and moisture.

Location, Location, Location

Consider the placement of the knobs and how far they will stick out when installed. Smaller bathrooms will do better with flatter knobs without sharp edges, especially if they are installed in an area that is easily bumped into. If you are installing knobs in an area that children have access to, also consider rounded, smooth knobs.

Enhance

To enhance your knobs even further, consider purchasing a backplate. These decorative pieces give the knob a more substantial look and can cover old holes from previously installed knobs or pulls.

Installation

If you are replacing existing knobs, simply unscrew the old ones and replace with the new knobs. If you are installing knobs on something that does not have existing knobs, you will need to drill a hole.

To tighten loose knobs, simply tighten the screw. If there is still too much wiggle, try adding some washers to wedge the knob in place. Many knobs orders include screws. However, since cabinets and drawers are not a standard width, you may find that the screws are not the correct length. Your local Lowes store should have the length you need.
